About me
Hi, I’m Ruth!
I experience many clients saying that they don’t believe that their problems are bad enough - there must be others in need who are suffering more, or that it is indulgent to go for counselling. Maybe people around them have questioned if they really need to get help? If you are finding it hard to manage for whatever reason, remember that you deserve to be heard and that your experiences, memories and feelings are real for you.
Maybe someone around you is suggesting that you should seek some help and you aren’t sure. Ultimately it is your choice.
When any type of mental health or emotional concern affects daily life and function, therapy may be recommended. Therapy can help you learn about what you’re feeling, why you might be feeling it, and how to cope.
A gentle, relational approach
My core psychotherapy training is in Relational Transactional Analysis (TA). TA is a theory of communication and psychology which has its roots in psychoanalysis, but was developed in the 60s by Eric Berne to make therapy much more accessible. I draw on humanistic philosophy, some cognitive behavioural intervention and psychodynamic theory. I recognise that the quality of the therapeutic relationship, above any one particular theoretical orientation, is the most important aspect of successful therapeutic work.
Thinking, sensing, feeling and intuiting are all given emphasis within the framework of our working relationship.
I have a deep guided personal practice of embodiment and movement which I will bring into our work if this is something you find helpful. Somatic therapy approaches can access trauma in the body without words and can also lead to a stabilisation and regulation of the nervous system. These are very powerful ways to support yourself and release your life-force energy.
All of this helps me understand the complexities of your situation, which includes not only your internal world, but your experiences within the wider family and socio-cultural context. My practice is grounded in anti-racist and anti-oppressive values and actions. Using an intersectional lens, I systematically consider your whole person – mind, body, spirit, environment and context.
I also consider the ancestors, generational trauma and stories. I believe we are all creatures of the earth and part of nature.
I hold a holistic view of the world and of people, I believe people can change.
